Coron Reefs And Shipwrecks Tour

January 29, 2015

This tour is actually part of the Calauit Safari Tour by Sea but if you are going to avail it without the trip to Calauit, it will cost less. It consists of four main destinations: Black Island, Black Cave, Lusong Coral Garden and Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck

Black Island

This island got its name because among all the surrounding islands, it is the only one with such color.

This is the first picture we captured while nearing the island.

Even from afar, you can see that it has really white sands. But it got even better when we got closer.
The place looks like a paradise with its turquoise-colored waters, changing as it deepens, coupled by its pure white sand that did not feel hot to the feet even though it was already 12noon.

As we docked near the island, there was this weird thing in the water.

Apparently, it was a shipwreck of a battleship. It was a Japanese ship bombed  by US during World War II in 1944. After many years, the only thing left of it was its skeleton. Out of curiosity, we walked towards it. It was just a piece of metal buried in the sand. According to our boatman, there was also another shipwreck near the island but it is suitable for diving than just snorkeling.

From a certain angle, the rock at the side of the island looks like the head of King Kong.

We had our lunch in the island and it was funny because while I was eating, something was roaming around below the table. I thought it was just a dog but lo and behold it was a...
A PIG!
...a pig that was owned by the inhabitant in the island! It was really weird, crazy and funny at the same time. The pig was like a pet dog being called by its owner. It was really odd.

After having our lunch, we roamed around the island. and there was a cave there called Black Cave.

Black Cave

The black cave has a really wide opening but it gets smaller as you go inside it.

Our tour guide toured us around the cave. It is highly recommended to bring a flashlight when doing this route. But we managed to do it by just using one flashlight and camera flashes. We entered the big hole on the right and went out through another hole on the left side.

Its rocks shine like diamonds. It is sparkling perhaps due to its crystals?

Plus there was a big pool inside filled with water but we didn't get to dip in it. But according to those who tried it, the water was cold.

After touring around the cave, our tour guide coached us to hop on the boat and continue on our journey.

Lusong Coral Garden

The Lusong Coral Garden is a colorful garden filled with different kinds of fishes. They even got to see a turtle there. Unfortunately, we were snorkeling far from the group and little did we know that there was already a turtle swimming near us. Nevertheless, we enjoyed the underwater scene that we saw. Here are some of them.

Anchovies Run

This coral that stands out from the rest
Be careful though because there is a strong current in the area. According to our guide, strong currents indicate a rich marine life because these corals feed on whatever the currents bring to them. After snorkeling around for 30-40 minutes, our tour guide called us and we left for Lusong Gunboat.

Lusong Gunboat Shipwreck

Surprisingly, the shipwreck was really big that you can stand on it and you will still be above the water. This was the first time that I was able to see an actual shipwreck buried in the sea and it was a really amazing view. Who knew that such misfortune that happened long time ago would create such a scenic view today?

The place is filled with fishes happily swimming around you. They are not afraid of humans at all and are not hiding or running away from you.

After enjoying the beautiful scene in there, we had to go as the sun was already setting down and we were still quite far from the main town. As we head back to town, we witnessed this wonderful view of the sunset.

And that was how we spent the other half of our second day in Coron. Click here to know what we did during the first half.
