Touring Around Coron Town

January 30, 2015

Travel agencies often offer Coron town tour by renting a tricycle. However, Coron town tour sites can actually be visited just by walking, they really are not far from each other. Maquinit Hotspring is the only place where you will really need to hire a tricycle.

Lualhati Park

This park is a quiet place near the bay where you can just sit down and relax. There is also a zipline in the area. It is basically just a park where you can do some photo-ops.

How to get there:

From Coron Bistro, go straight to Don Pedro St. and then turn right to Caltex Road.

Mount Tapyas

Mt. Tapyas consists of 700+ steps until you reach the cross on top of the mountain. It is quite tiring due to the stairs and it was easier to climb it when you walk at the sides with no stairs. However, you might slip if you are not good in balancing yourself so it is not recommended even though it is easier that way.

It is recommended to visit this place before sunrise, like around 5am or before sunset, around 5pm because it has a scenic view of the sun.

How to get there:
Coming from the National Highway, turn left (if you're coming from the side of Lolo Nonoy's) or right (if you're coming from the side of Neptune Dive Center) to San Agustin St. You might also see this sign along the way.

Keep on walking until you reach the sign, Tapyas Road.

Walk straight up and you will see the stairs going to Mount Tapyas.

I suggest you do some stretching first before starting your climb. But don't worry because there are seats along the way where you can rest your tired calves/feet.

You will know when you are nearing the top as this cross gets bigger.

They have also put on a sign of Coron ala Hollywood on top of the mountain. Mind you, it was not there when I visited the place last 2012.

After around 15minutes, we are finally on top.

From the top, you will be overlooking the town of Coron.

Nearby islands

People do not actually know this but there is a scenic view behind the cross. People usually stop the moment they reach the cross because they are too tired already. But the real view is at the back of the cross.

After doing some photo-ops, we finally went down town and looked for something to eat.

Maquinit Hotspring

People usually head to Maquinit after a tiring climb from Mount Tapyas due to the hotspring's relaxing hot water.

How to get there:
We hired a tricycle going there and it took us approximately 15 minutes to reach it. You will first go through a cemented road and then out of nowhere, the tricycle will turn right and then be ready for a bumpy ride.

The tricycle hire costs 150php/head and the entrance fee to the place is 200php/head.

Alternatively, when you hire a boat, you can also be dropped off in this place after your island hopping. But I think there will be an additional 200php charge/head.

The place significantly improved from what I've seen two years ago. According to our guide, it is a privately owned place and the owner evidently continues to make the place look better. It now has nipa huts where people can stay while in there. Our guide also mentioned that a normal person, even those who are used to hot baths can only stay in the water for approximately 45minutes.

There are also mangroves at the back of the place where you can do some photo-ops. It is also where the water from the hot spring continually flows.  For some reasons, the water of the hot spring is also slightly salty.

The hot water of Maquinit Hotspring really relaxes tired muscles and it really is a good way to end a tiring day from all the activities in Coron.

*Cashew nut makers is also a part of Coron Town Tour.  Unfortunately, it is seasonal and it was not in season when we went there.

  1. Thank you very much! I'm gonna do everything DIY and rent a boat. I've read everything you blogged. It's really a great help. I'm waiting for the boat rentals to respond to my message. Unless you have any recommendations.
