DIY Dolphin Watching

August 3, 2015

Bais is located north of Dumaguete City and is the place for Dolphin Watching. The main jump-off point is Capiñahan Wharf and then the boat goes east to Tanon Strait.

How To Get To Bais

1. Coming from the airport, walk towards the exit on your right until you reach a gas station.
2. From there, you can ride a bus going to Bais which is the jumpoff point for Dolphin Watching. Ride the bus with a signage of "Manjuyod." I am not sure of how much the fare is because we hired a vehicle going to Bais.
3. Drop off at Mercado de Bais.
4. Ride a tricycle going to Capiñahan Wharf or ask the boatman that you hired to pick you up.

If you're coming from Dumaguete City Proper, just ride a tricycle going to Ceres Bus Terminal (near Robinsons Dumaguete) for PHP8 and then ride a bus with a signage of Manjuyod.

Typical travel time is 1 to 1.5 hour; it depends on the frequency the driver picks up a passenger.

Dolphin Watching

It is recommended to hire a boat prior to going there and be at the wharf around 6-7am to secure that you will see lots of dolphins. But it is also possible to see dolphins even if you arrive around 8 in the morning. You may opt to stay at Sandoval Pension House if you want to arrive early without having to wake up very early.

Here are a couple of contact persons for boat rentals who have replied to my inquiry:
09068787888
09391852245
09287853807
09208418371
09059614678
09493741250

Just contact them and haggle your price. The usual price ranges from PHP2000-PHP6000 depending on how big the boat is. However, I recommend that you hire the smaller boat because the smaller the boat is, the less elevated it will be from the sea. Ergo, you will have a closer encounter with the dolphins.

You may opt not to go to the Manjuyod Bar and they would give you a lower price.

We rode the boat at around 8am and then after cruising for around 30 minutes, we were greeted with these pods of dolphins.

I am amazed by the abundance of dolphins in this area. As in you can see them swimming all around the area.

Note that YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS. You just have to watch them from afar.

For your food, you can buy food (both raw and cooked) at Mercado de Bais or make arrangements with your boatmen to cook lunch for you.

Manjuyod Sand Bar

Unfortunately, it was high tide when we went to Manjuyod Sand Bar and did not experience it as it should be.

Our boatmen informed us that you can sleep overnight at these houses but for a certain price.

You should pay at the Bais Tourism Office (located across Mercado de Bais) before heading to the cottages.

It is recommended to visit Manjuyod Sand Bar during summer and very early morning so that it is low tide.

We left Bais at around 4pm and arrived at Dumaguete City at around 5pm. You can finish the activity at an earlier time. We just opted to chill out for the whole afternoon at Manjuyod Sand Bar area.

Tips:

1. Wear rashguard when swimming in Manjuyod Sand Bar. It really gets itchy while swimming in the area
2. Hire a smaller boat for a closer encounter with the dolphins.
